Walking Tour #2: Shaw Gentrification & Community Change

Thursday, May 16, 6pm

5905189581-1Good news: Although DC was recently named the most unaffordable city in the country, Shaw neighborhood activists have been coming together for community-led development for more than fifty years, and there’s a lot we can learn from their efforts to make sure neighborhood change doesn’t lead to displacement.

Join the Diverse City Fund for a 2-hour walking tour of the Shaw neighborhood. Among other things, we’ll discuss the neighborhood’s history and look at how new & longtime residents have united to win funding for new affordable housing and community centers, take control of their high-rise apartment buildings and start an Occupy movement (way back in 2010).

The tour will feature presentations by several DC Fund grantees based in the neighborhood.

This walking tour fundraiser is capped at 20 participants, for a donation of $15-$50 sliding scale, and all funds raised will be distributed to small, community organizations in the DC Fund’s Fall 2013 grant round. Starting location near the Mt. Vernon Square Metro will be emailed with confirmation.
